The Junior League of Berkshire County Accepting Scholarship Applications

March 31, 2008 -
The Junior League of Berkshire County is now accepting applications for the Nicole Wilson Beebe Memorial Scholarship for $1,000. The award is given annually to recognize a female high school student who has shown a commitment to the spirit of voluntarism.

Nicole Wilson Beebe was a Junior League of Berkshire County member who died after giving birth to her child. She was the embodiment of what we stand for which is service to the community and personal growth for our members. The Junior League serves the community while training civic leaders and Nicole did both well. We honor her memory each year by rewarding a scholarship in her name to a graduating senior who shows a commitment to the voluntarism we work so hard to promote.

The Junior League of Berkshire County, JLBC, is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the action and leadership of trained volunteers. They are members of the Association of Junior Leagues International, which is made up of 296 Junior Leagues in four countries involving more than 193,000 trained volunteer members. The JLBC has been serving Berkshire County since 1933.

The annual scholarship mentioned above is just one of the programs this year that was made possible by the Junior League of Berkshire County. They have developed the “Curl-up with a Good Book” literacy program-an evening of reading aloud and discussion where books are distributed at schools throughout the county. They have also funded and provided volunteer hours to Discovery, a national Girls Inc. program, which takes place at the Gladys Allen Brigham Center, formerly known as Girls Inc. Discovery is a mentoring program for at risk teens. The program was created to incorporate leadership, sharing and learning by example—bringing girls together with women who have a strong sense of community and the desire to share it.

College bound high school Seniors interested in applying for the Nicole Wilson Beebe Scholarship should see their school guidance counselors for application requirements. Information is also available online at the JLBC website www.jlbc.info.
