Junior League's Annual Scholarship for Outstanding Voluntarism Goes to Senior From Miss Hall's School

June 10, 2008 -
The Junior League of Berkshire County has awarded the Nicole Wilson Beebe Memorial Scholarship for $1,000 to Nora McCloskey, a 2008 graduate of Miss Hall’s School. Nora will attend Trinity College in the fall.

Nora represents the true spirit for which the Nicole Wilson Beebe Scholarship was created. Nicole Wilson Beebe was a Junior League of Berkshire County member who died shortly after giving birth to her child. She was the embodiment of what the Junior League stands for, which is service to the community and to developing the personal leadership potential in each member. The League honors Nicole’s memory each year by awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior who has shown a commitment to the spirit of voluntarism.

Nora is more than a volunteer around Berkshire County, she has spearheaded fundraisers; helped to secure grants; and has worked to improve the status of women and children worldwide. Her work on the 1000-mile relay involved gathering corporate sponsors and encouraging participation of young people around the county and has raised $30,000 and counting. She has worked with political officials and organized concerts to help those in need. She has created a brochure for the care and protection of the Housatonic River and has earned a grant for the printing and distribution. Nora has been an active member of the Rotary Interact Club a volunteer at the Gladys Allen Brigham Center, Girls Leadership Project, Egremont Elementary School and her school Z-Club. Nora McCloskey is a young lady who understands that a dream becomes a goal when action is taken towards its achievement.

Nora plans on attending Trinity College in Hartford. She would like to major in International Relations with concentrations in Middle Eastern Studies and Human Rights. Her hopes include studying abroad, attending graduate school, participating in the Peace Corps and working for the U.S. State Department of International Affairs.

The annual scholarship is just one of the programs that was made possible by the Junior League of Berkshire County. The League has also developed literacy and healthy living programs for children throughout the county and has collaborated with the Gladys Allen Brigham Center on Discovery, a national Girls Inc. program. Discovery was created to incorporate leadership, sharing and learning by example; bringing girls together with women who have a strong sense of community and the desire to share it. The Junior League has worked with D.S.S. to celebrate and raise awareness on the role of Foster Families in Berkshire County.

Nora McCloskey will be recognized for her outstanding commitment to voluntarism, in front of her family and the Junior League of Berkshire County at the annual dinner meeting on June 10th.
