Girls Incorporated Collaboration

This year we continue our partnership with Girls Inc.
We are helping to fund and donating volunteer hours to the Discovery Program for at risk girls ages 10-14. We meet weekly with the group to mentor and facilitate activities meant to stimulate interest in new or different life choices.

Curl Up With A Good Book

Teaching children to watch less TV and play less video games is addressed with our literacy program. The League is proud to have developed "Curl Up With A Good Book". Lead by a story teller, the team travels to county schools for an evening of reading. Volunteers read to school children stopping between books to talk about the importance of reading and being read to. At the end of the books, the kids are served cider and home baked goods and invited to choose a book of their own to curl up with. They all go home with a free book purchased with funds raised by the Junior League. The events have been popular and the schools are thrilled to be chosen for the activity.

Louison House Project

Enhancing a transitional home for homeless families in North Adams. The JLBC donated a swing set, vegetable and flower gardens, lunch and fellowship with the residents of this temporary shelter. It rained buckets all day but it was worth it to see this shabby yard turned into something that the residents could enjoy.

Fit Kids Park

The Communiity Programs worked hard to bring the first Fit Kids Park to Pittsfield.

The purpose of the park is for fun and exercise to march in tandem on the “fitness trail. Instead of spending time sitting in front of the television or computer this park can give kids, and their families, healthier options. The Junior League would like to help make the city parks a destination for families to enjoy themselves with healthy activity.

Stations include parallel bars, a beam jump, body curl board, horizontal loop ladder, hip rotation bar, push up bar, chin up bar and small climbing wall.

Coolidge Park is a sprawling, largely undeveloped landmass that includes the Conte School campus and trails leading to Taconic High School. It has been the subject of considerable inconclusive discussion in recent years and the League was excited to give the park some purpose.

We are happy to hear that the nearby Conte and St.Marks schools have been using the park and the Provisional class members will be planning an activity around it.
